Open Source Smartphone
Enviu will challenge everybody around the world to be part of the development of a new, open source, user-generated and very sustainable smartphone; Our Open Source Smart Phone. The goal is to come up with a physical test model and an open source instruction on how to build your own Open Source Smart Phone. Our Open Source Smart Phone will be designed in the most social (fair) and environmental (green) friendly way. It should be smart, sexy, affordable and be able to be produced all over the world.

Add-on Technology
Mobile phones and Smartphones in particular have become mini computers with many high-tech features. Two main characteristics of the phone (computing and sending device) create opportunities to use mobile phones for a large variety of diagnostic purposes. If we connect our phone to small and smart external devices (add-on technology) we can measure, diagnose, analyze and share a large variety of data and thereby create significant social and/or environmental impact. Some examples:
- Connect a phone to a small device to analyze the quality of drinking water and share the results with a global database
- Connect a phone to a microscope to analyze samples of body tissue (MobiScopy)
- Add a device to your phone to measure and map global air pollution

3D printing and local production models
Enviu is very much inspired by the possibilities of 3D printing and we see large opportunities for this technology in the near future. We are interested to explore the possibilities of 3D printing and the required local production systems during the OMG project. We want to research the sustainability impact of such a production system for both B2B and B2C markets. We want to understand what we can expect from this technology in the future and use the mobile phone as a case study.

Apps4Sustainability
We challenge our community to come up with ideas for apps that can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. These apps can be targeted at various target groups (e.g. developed vs. developing countries). Some examples that we like include an innovative barcode app to choose the most sustainable product, or an app for an African farmer to receive information on subjects such as weather, market prices for his goods and organic pest control. Our goal is to co-develop with you as many of these great ideas into working apps!

Sustainable Business Models
Enviu sees room for improvement in the global value cycles of the mobile telecom industry and wants to explore the possibilities to develop new innovative business models for this industry. These business models should be scalable, profitable and should contribute to the solution of a social or environmental problem. We will mostly focus on two areas in the value cycle:
- Social business models for developing countries with mobile phones as the core enabling technology
- Innovative business models to reduce the impact of e-waste generated by mobile phones
